This page is not a permission slip for sloppy projects. It is a request to stop treating data halls as a unique environmental crime while Florida already runs much larger water and land systems in plain sight.

PwC’s Global Data Centre Outlook (2 Sep 2026) puts annual data-center capex at roughly $800 billion in 2026, rising toward $1.8 trillion a year by 2050 in the central case.

Do not quote $20 trillion as money already in the ground. That figure is not a verified current installed-base total. The sourced picture is hundreds of billions this year, trillions over the next two decades, and nearly half of the long-run PwC case landing in the United States — if the country actually builds.

If the United States does not host that capacity, the work, the models, the industry, and the military advantage go somewhere else. Compute is the factory floor of AI.

Who benefits when we stall

Rivals do not need you to like them. They need you to delay.

The U.S. intelligence community’s 2026 Annual Threat Assessment is public. China is the most capable competitor in AI and aims to displace the United States as the global AI leader by 2030. China is also named as the most active persistent cyber threat to U.S. government, private-sector, and critical-infrastructure networks.

The honest line: foreign adversaries do not have to write the flyer. They win when American towns apply a water standard to data centers that they do not apply to golf, grows, lawns and beachfront turf.

Florida locations and facilities

Data centers sit near the bottom of ordinary commercial geography. That is not an argument that impacts are zero. It is an argument that Florida already accepted far larger networks without a moral panic.

Amazon includes fulfillment, sortation, distribution and delivery. Cannabis figures are approved dispensing locations, not grow-room buildings. Golf is a course count.

Water and runoff — known vs not. Florida does not publish a statewide MMTC water-use census. Indoor-cannabis literature used by western state engineers is about 0.26–0.50 gallons per square foot of canopy per day, plus RO reject and fertigation waste. Illustration only: Trulieve’s 750,000 sq ft Jefferson County building at a 0.38 gal/sq ft/day midpoint would be about 285,000 gallons per day if the whole floor were canopy. It is not all canopy. It is not a census.

Flying communities and coastal towers. Residential airparks exist — Spruce Creek in Port Orange is the well-known example — plus gated golf villages and beachfront condo rows. There is no honest statewide water total for “rich neighborhoods with airplanes.” Use the documented reuse totals. Do not invent a private-jet gallon figure.

“Closed loop” must mean the right thing.

The honest argument is not that data centers have no impact. It is that design determines impact, that Florida already accepted much larger water and land systems for lawns, golf, farms and licensed grows, and that refusing compute is how a country loses the next industrial stack.
